History

Eva Bory was born in Hungary.

She taught herself to swim in a lake at the age of 9 and began swimming training at age 11. At 18 she was selected to compete at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 after recording the fastest time in the world for the 100 m backstroke in 1955.

She was a member of the national Hungarian team which broke the world record for the 4x100 m Medley relay.  After competing at the Olympics, Eva applied for and was granted political asylum in Australia.

In 1958 Eva started to teach swimming at Bondi Baths. In 1961 she teamed up with Forbes Carlile at Sydney's first indoor heated learn to swim school where she helped to establish the now famous Carlile swimming program and teaching methods.

In 1967 she built her first indoor pool in Toongabbie in partnership with former Australian head coach Don Talbot. The pool at Emu Plains was built in 1973.

In 1971 Eva wrote a book-Teach Your Child To Swim-which was published in all English speaking countries. The book was re printed 3 times and in 1984 it was re published as a paperback by Simon & Schuster.

In 1984 Eva moved to the USA and is now living in Phoenix Arizona.

Eva was inducted into the Australian Swimming Hall of Fame for her services to swimming in Australia.

Our history at Eva Bory’s goes back to 1976 when Karen learnt to swim there. Alan also swam there in swimming squads from 1980 to 1994. Karen started work there as a swimming instructor in 1986 and became a level 2 performance coach in 1994. We managed the pool from 1992 to 1994 and returned to manage the pool again in March, 2002.
