About Fitness World Swimming

As our time at Fitness World Swimming comes to an end we would like you to take a trip back to when it was all shiny and new. We will leave this tribute up to Fitness World Swimming as it was the catalyst for NSF's growth in the Nepean area.

Ancient History

Fitness World Swimming was located in the World Gym complex in Penrith but this wasn’t always the case. Before there was World Gym and all their super buffed bodies there was Fitness World gym which catered to everyone. As well as the usual assortment of fitness equipment , it catered for indoor soccer and netball and had a steady clientele of normal people.

The Fitness World complex was built in 1984 by Ron Oxley. Ron owned and ran the gym until 2007.

In 1995 Alan and Karen approached Ron with the idea of building a pool within the existing complex.

Old Gym Floor Looking down onto the gym floor that would soon become our pool.

Our  plan was to build a pool specifically for teaching children to swim as well as providing Hydrotherapy and Aquarobics classes. After several different plans and ideas Ron decided to build the pool in what was the original gym area in late 1996.

Fitness World Swimming opened on 13th January, 1997 conducting around 250 swimming lessons during the first week.

Unfortunately Ron sold the gym in 2007 to enjoy a well earned retirement. This left us with a new landlord who didn’t share the same passion for educating the community in water safety as we did. Our new landlord had very shallow pockets and the swim centre deteriorated to the point where coming to agreement on a new lease was impossible.

This brought a sad end to our involvement at Fitness World Swimming in November, 2010 after nearly 14 years and teaching thousands of children how to swim.
